Welcome, friend—I’m glad you’ve pulled up a chair on the front porch of my little corner of the internet. My name is Michael Joe Harvell, and I live my life with one simple mission: to glorify God, encourage people, and leave this world a little better than I found it. I’m a husband, father, pastor, writer, Jeep enthusiast, and front-porch thinker who believes that life is best lived on purpose. I serve as pastor of Eureka Baptist Church in Anderson, South Carolina, where I get the joy of preaching, teaching, and walking with people through the ups and downs of everyday life. Over the years, I’ve discovered that faith isn’t just about Sunday mornings—it’s about living every single day in the presence and power of God. I’m also an author. My books—including The Grace Exchange: How Forgiven People Forgive People and The Word Works—grow out of the sermons, stories, and lessons I’ve learned on this journey. I write in a style that’s conversational, a little front-porch-rocking-chair, and full of stories, quotes, and Scripture that point us back to the goodness of God’s Word. When I’m not writing or preaching, you might find me sitting outside with my Bible and journal, cruising the backroads in my Jeep Gladiator, or sharing a meal and some laughs with the good folks God has put in my life. I love helping people find peace in their spirit, strength in their body, and encouragement in their soul. This blog is simply an extension of that mission. Here you’ll find devotions, encouragement, reflections, and practical insights for living a life of purpose, peace, and joy. So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a rocking chair, and stay awhile—I’d be honored to walk this road of faith with you.

What Is Your Greatest Fear And Greatest Dream?

Where Will It Take You?

Two questions:  What is your biggest fear and what is your biggest dream?  Stop, take a moment and really think about it!  If you can answer these two questions, then you can get set up to make some major progress in your life and the fulfillment of the purpose that fulfills you!

What is it that you fear and what is the fear doing to you or what is that fear keeping you from doing?  We often have fears, but never take the time to consider the cost of having the fear.  If we would consider the cost, then we might decide to get rid of it, because it is just way to expensive!

Once you have figured out your fear or fears, take some time to talk with your Creator.  He knows you, what you are facing and will not be surprised by anything you tell Him.  Just talking about it and taking the time to share it, will help you to get a better grasp, understanding and direction.  Next listen for what your Creator will say back to you.  It may come through something you read, something you observe in nature or hear in a conversation, but He will be speaking to guide, grow and help you overcome and gain victory over your fear.

What is your biggest dream and what steps are you taking to see the dream become a reality?  You will need to take some time to think about your dreams.  Everyone has a dream, but most of us have not thought enough about our dreams to be able to articulate and share them with someone else, so while we know our dreams, we are not really sure about how they will or can happen!  Take some time to actually write down your dreams.  Write everything down, the small and the big and then take some time to share these dreams with your Creator.  Figure out what dreams He put in your heart and then with His help and guidance – start to chase after those dreams.  (And by the way – enjoy the chase!)

Two pretty simple questions with the potential to make a powerful impact upon your life, so that your life can make a powerful impact upon others.  What is your greatest fear and your greatest dream?  What are you going to do about it?

An Audience Of One!

Who Is Your Audience?

Sometimes I care way to much about what other people think!  I’m not saying that we shouldn’t care about what other people think, it’s just that sometimes I let what others think influence me in a way that keeps me from doing I was created to do and keeps me from being who I was created to be!

My being overly concerned about what others think actually gets in the way of my living the productive and satisfying life that I was created for!  When I actually take the time to think about it, I find that this attitude can be traced back all the way to my childhood.

A few weeks ago, a friend was going through a tough time thinking about what she was going to do in sharing with a group of people.  She was starting to stress over the details.  I was looking to encourage my friend and the Spirit shared some advice for me to share with her.  This was the advice:  “You only need to be concerned with the Audience of One!”  Don’t think about or worry about all of the others, what they will think or what they will say!

It’s not easy, but it is true!  There is only ONE that we need to be concerned about, and if we live a life that is pleasing to Him, then that is really the only thing that matters!  I can tell you from personal experience, when I am living my life to please Him, some will like it and some will not, but that is not my concern, because there is really nothing that I can do about that!  Any effort on my part will mess up my being pleasing to Him and just drive me crazy!

I don’t know if you ever have to deal with this kind of challenge or not, but if you do, I encourage you to remember that you have an “Audience Of One” and that is all that really matters!
