“Don’t get so busy preparing for tomorrow that you forget to appreciate the blessings of today.”
A gentleman ought to make plans. There are responsibilities to honor, people to care for, and work that needs doing. But somewhere between checking the calendar and checking things off our list, we need to stop long enough to notice the goodness God has placed right in front of us.
That cup of coffee. That familiar voice. That laughter coming from the other room. That cool breeze reminding you the seasons are changing.
Those little things can become mighty precious when you realize you won’t always have them exactly as you have them today.
I’m learning that you can spend so much time thinking about what comes next that you hardly pay attention to what’s happening now. You can sit at the table with people you love while your mind is already halfway through tomorrow’s problems.
Gentlemen, the people around us deserve our attention. Look up from the phone. Listen to the whole story. Let the conversation last a little longer. Tell somebody you appreciate them while you have the opportunity.
Psalm 118:24 reminds us, “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
There may still be bills on the counter and questions on your heart. You may be carrying something you haven’t figured out how to fix. Even so, there is room in this day for gratitude. You can bring your concerns to God and thank Him for the good that is here, too.
Being a distinguished gentleman includes learning to be present—to offer a kind word, receive a kindness graciously, and recognize how much of an ordinary day is a gift.
So make your plans. Do your work. Prepare for the future with wisdom and prayer. And when someone you love walks into the room, give them your attention. When something makes you smile, take a moment to enjoy it. When you recognize a blessing, thank the Lord.
Tomorrow will have its turn.
Today, by the grace of God, you are here. Take a breath, look around, and appreciate the blessings within reach.
