The Gentleman’s Code: Faith, Kindness, and Integrity
By Michael Joe Harvell
There was a time when being called a gentleman meant something. It wasn’t about the clothes he wore, the money in his pocket, or the title attached to his name. It was about his character, his convictions, and the way he treated people.
Somewhere along the way, we’ve allowed the world to convince us that success is measured by possessions, popularity, and personal accomplishments. But my friend, I’ve lived long enough to discover that the true measure of a man isn’t how many people are impressed by his presence. It’s how many people are blessed because he was there.
That’s what I call The Gentleman’s Code.
A true gentleman walks in faith. He understands that his greatest strength comes from his relationship with Jesus Christ. Proverbs 3:5 reminds us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” His faith isn’t something he simply talks about on Sunday. It’s something he strives to demonstrate every day through his decisions, his attitude, and his actions.
A gentleman speaks with kindness. He doesn’t have to be the loudest person in the room or win every argument. He understands that listening is often more valuable than speaking and that a thoughtful word can change somebody’s entire day. He treats everyone with dignity, whether they’re sitting behind an executive desk or serving his morning coffee.
A gentleman acts with integrity. He keeps his word, honors his commitments, admits his mistakes, and does what’s right even when nobody is watching. He understands that a good reputation may impress people, but genuine character is what earns their trust.
And perhaps most importantly, a gentleman strives to leave people better than he found them. Galatians 6:10 reminds us, “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men.” Sometimes that means offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, making a telephone call, or simply taking time to listen. You don’t have to change the whole world to make a difference. Sometimes you just need to make somebody’s world a little better.
As I continue my journey toward becoming The Complete Gentleman, I’m discovering that it’s not about becoming somebody I’m not. It’s about becoming more of the man God has called me to be. I want to keep learning, growing, improving, and serving. I want to carry myself with confidence without arrogance, demonstrate strength without cruelty, and enjoy life’s blessings without forgetting what matters most.
So tomorrow morning, straighten your collar, shine your shoes, stand tall, and offer somebody a genuine smile. But before you walk out that door, make sure you’ve prepared your heart as carefully as you’ve prepared your appearance.
Because the finest thing a gentleman can wear isn’t an expensive suit or a beautiful watch. It’s a life marked by faith, kindness, humility, and integrity.
And my friend, that’s a style that will never go out of fashion!
God Bless & Press On!
