Welcome, friend—I’m glad you’ve pulled up a chair on the front porch of my little corner of the internet. My name is Michael Joe Harvell, and I live my life with one simple mission: to glorify God, encourage people, and leave this world a little better than I found it. I’m a husband, father, pastor, writer, Jeep enthusiast, and front-porch thinker who believes that life is best lived on purpose. I serve as pastor of Eureka Baptist Church in Anderson, South Carolina, where I get the joy of preaching, teaching, and walking with people through the ups and downs of everyday life. Over the years, I’ve discovered that faith isn’t just about Sunday mornings—it’s about living every single day in the presence and power of God. I’m also an author. My books—including The Grace Exchange: How Forgiven People Forgive People and The Word Works—grow out of the sermons, stories, and lessons I’ve learned on this journey. I write in a style that’s conversational, a little front-porch-rocking-chair, and full of stories, quotes, and Scripture that point us back to the goodness of God’s Word. When I’m not writing or preaching, you might find me sitting outside with my Bible and journal, cruising the backroads in my Jeep Gladiator, or sharing a meal and some laughs with the good folks God has put in my life. I love helping people find peace in their spirit, strength in their body, and encouragement in their soul. This blog is simply an extension of that mission. Here you’ll find devotions, encouragement, reflections, and practical insights for living a life of purpose, peace, and joy. So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a rocking chair, and stay awhile—I’d be honored to walk this road of faith with you.

Does “Agreement” Really Matter?

There Is Great Power In Agreement!

Most people would rather disagree than agree.  We just seem to like to be at odds in this world.  Sometimes we will even disagree just to be able to argue with someone.  As Believers, we need to grab hold of and guard this very precious gift of God.  That’s right!  I called it a gift!  Agreement is a gift!  A gift that has the potential to bring great power into our lives!

Jesus put it this way:  19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”  Matthew 18:19-20

Our authority and power over the enemy is increased when we are in agreement!  When you and I come together with Jesus, there is great power at work.  The power that brings us together and keeps us together grows in intensity and strength and allows us to accomplish supernatural things for God’s glory!

Deuteronomy 19:15 says:  “One witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”  We see this same principle in the New Testament book of 1 Timothy 5:19, where it says “Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.”

Ecclesiastes 4 puts it this way:   9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:  10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.  11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.  But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.  A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

We could look at different examples of agreement and it’s encouragement and practice in the Scriptures all day long.  The Bible is full of examples, illustrations and directions!  We need to accept agreement as a reality that the Spirit has for us and utilize it for God’s glory!

If we are divided the house will fall and the enemy will triumph!  This is not acceptable, even if his triumph is temporary!  You may be tempted to think that this only applies to the church, but if we are divided and the house falls, then our lives are wide open and vulnerable to attack!  This is why Jesus prayed for unity and why Paul said that we are to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit!

Our mission and purpose in this life is to go into ALL the WORLD and SHARE the GOOD NEWS with ALL CREATION. When we are obedient and work in unity, what is the result? Jesus will work WITH US, IN US and THROUGH US to CONFIRM His Word with many signs and wonders.

We can’t have agreement without unity and we can’t have unity without love!  We must take seriously the Great Commandment:  “To love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul and mind.  And the second which is very close to it:  To love our neighbor as ourself!”

  • Agreement increases the power of our prayers more than our minds can imagine.
  • Agreement assures our success in victorious warfare against the enemy.
  • Agreement insures the presence of the Lord in our lives and His blessings on our every endeavor.
  • Agreement attracts the attention of our loving Heavenly Father, Who is waiting and wanting to work on our behalf!
  • Agreement is a hindrance to the promotion of the devil’s kingdom and a discouragement to all of his plans.

And above all, Agreement is evidence to the world that Jesus was sent by God to be our Savior and this brings great glory to God when we get it!

Up Or Down Attitude?

Check Your Attitude!

Your attitude matters more than you realize!  It matters for you and it matters for others!  Attitude has the ability to lift up or to push down!  Attitude is what separates winners from losers.  Attitude makes the difference between the successful and unsuccessful.  What good is it to win and experience success, if you can’t or won’t enjoy it?

You need a good attitude and you need to surround yourself with people who have good attitudes!  When you get good attitudes together, the impossible becomes possible, because faith in God makes all things possible!  We tend to pick up on the mind-sets, beliefs and approaches of those around us.  If they are up, then we tend to be up and if they are down, then we tend to be down!

Bad attitudes can wreck you faster than anything!  Most of the world tends to lean negative now a days and if you are not careful, then you can get caught up in that negativity and before you know it you have joined a choir that loves to sing the blues!  Attitude spreads, so make sure that you do everything you can to keep a good one! Attitude also catches, so make sure that you avoid stinking attitudes whenever, wherever and however you can!

As Christians, we should have great big positive attitudes of expectation.  We should seek to always be positive because we have a God who loves us and who has created us for the very specific purpose of bringing Him glory.  It is impossible to give God the glory He is due with a negative attitude!

Guard and protect your attitude.  Make sure that you take on and take out anything that might cause you to have a less than positive attitude.  Get around positive people.  Listen to positive music and messages.  Read positive materials.  Think positive thoughts.  In every conversation – try to share at least three positive things with every person you talk to.  Before you know it, you will become a positive person that others look to have relationship with and you will experience a different and better way of living!

The Devil’s Ugly Step Sister!

Negativity Is Uglier Than Most Of Us Care To Admit!

I have noticed that I have been bombarded with lots and lots of negativity lately!  I am not generally a negative person, but you can only take so much, before it starts to get to you.  I noticed that all of the negativity was beginning to get to me and decided that I needed to do something about it!

I started this past week to build into my week and daily living all kinds of different ways to fuel positive energy into my life.  I figured the best way to combat the negative is to counteract it with positive.  I am not personally allowing anything negative to creep in through the sources that I can control.  Negaitive will still come into my life, but not if I can help it!

This means what I allow my eyes to see and read has to be positive.  What I allow my ears to hear in conversation, music and other audio has to be positive.  There are many different streams that flow into my life and while I can’t control all of the streams, I can control some of the streams and the ones that I can control, I will control by taking out the negative and replacing it with positive.

I already have God’s Word as a positive stream flowing into my life, so I have been looking for ways to increase its flow.  I already have the power of prayer flowing into my life, so I have been looking for ways to experience more of its power.  I am trying to read, listen and have conversations that keep the positive stuff of God’s Spirit and power flowing into and through my life.

This is a battle and it is not easy, but it is so necessary in our world which seems to grow a little more negative everyday.  I also have discovered that I have to be on guard about friendships.  Some friends that I dearly love are just negative people and they seem to be down and actually seem to enjoy helping to take you there.  I’ve often noticed that the more positive I become, the less involved negative friends want to be with me – that should tell me something right there!

I’ve got a feeling that I am not the only person who finds myself in this odd and awkward place.  If you find yourself continually having to fight against the pessimistic influence of negativity, then why don’t you join me in doing something about it.  Let’s fight back with the positive promises of God’s life changing Word!

Jesus came to set us free from sin and all its negativity, so that we could live life in the positive power of the Spirit!  I claim the powerful promises of God which tell me that He is working all things for my good and His glory!
