Welcome, friend—I’m glad you’ve pulled up a chair on the front porch of my little corner of the internet. My name is Michael Joe Harvell, and I live my life with one simple mission: to glorify God, encourage people, and leave this world a little better than I found it. I’m a husband, father, pastor, writer, Jeep enthusiast, and front-porch thinker who believes that life is best lived on purpose. I serve as pastor of Eureka Baptist Church in Anderson, South Carolina, where I get the joy of preaching, teaching, and walking with people through the ups and downs of everyday life. Over the years, I’ve discovered that faith isn’t just about Sunday mornings—it’s about living every single day in the presence and power of God. I’m also an author. My books—including The Grace Exchange: How Forgiven People Forgive People and The Word Works—grow out of the sermons, stories, and lessons I’ve learned on this journey. I write in a style that’s conversational, a little front-porch-rocking-chair, and full of stories, quotes, and Scripture that point us back to the goodness of God’s Word. When I’m not writing or preaching, you might find me sitting outside with my Bible and journal, cruising the backroads in my Jeep Gladiator, or sharing a meal and some laughs with the good folks God has put in my life. I love helping people find peace in their spirit, strength in their body, and encouragement in their soul. This blog is simply an extension of that mission. Here you’ll find devotions, encouragement, reflections, and practical insights for living a life of purpose, peace, and joy. So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a rocking chair, and stay awhile—I’d be honored to walk this road of faith with you.

A Prayer To Take On & Take Out Bad News!

Real Prayer Is Believing Prayer!

Lord, help me not to be shaken by the bad news given by men, but help me to be shaken by the Good News provided by my Lord.  I choose to believe You and Your unlimited Word over the limited word of man.  Bad news does not faze me, because I am learning to trust in You and believe Your Word even in the midst of the most challenging circumstances.

Help me to learn to live independent and separate of the circumstances.  Your Word says that “by Jesus’ stripes I was healed” and this is the news – I choose to believe.  I appreciate what the Doctors have to say, but I choose to believe what you say:  I am healed!  I am not denying that sickness does not exist in my body, but I do deny sickness the right to continue to exist in my body.  I do not care what my body says; I say according to the Word of God that I am healed and I choose to believe it and that settles the matter.

The word of man can never change the Word of God, but the Word of God is continually changing the Word of man.  I don’t deny what the Doctor says, but I do deny that this is the final word, because God’s Word supersedes the word of men.  I choose to believe the Good News of God that teaches me that Jesus paid for my healing over 2000 years ago.  God’s Word says that the law of life in Jesus Christ has set me free for the law of sin and death.  I claim the healing and health that God’s Word says are my right and privilege as a child of the most High God!

Now Lord help me to live Philippians 4:8  “Finally brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.”

What To Do When You Can’t Handle Life!

You Can't Handle It And That's A Good Thing!

Sometimes life just gets to be more than I can handle!  The truth is:  Life is always more than I can handle!  I actually have had moments where I begin to believe that I can and that I am handling life!  That’s kinda funny and just little bit sad!  Handling life is an illusion at best!

I can’t handle life and I don’t need to!  If I could handle it, then I don’t need anybody or anything to help me and that’s just not true and when I think about it, I don’t want that to be true!  Life would be pretty boring and meaningless without others.

The fact is:  I need others and I need for others to need me!  It’s the way I was created.  It’s hardwired into my dna.  This thing that I make an issue in my life, really does not need to be an issue, but it is an issue and that’s a good thing, because it makes me think about it.

When we get to that place of thinking we can’t handle life, then we have to think about it and when we really start to think about it, we have to admit that we can’t handle life and really we don’t need to handle it.  We simply need to live it!

One moment at a time!  There it is – the challenge!  When I can’t handle life, it’s not a bad thing, it’s an invitation to appreciate, enjoy, learn and grow in the moment.  Really that’s what life is:  A series of moments strung together through time.  When we try to live too many of those moments at one time, life becomes something we can’t handle, life becomes something we don’t need to handle!

When you get to the place where you realize that you can’t handle life, stop and take a moment to realize that you don’t have to handle anything, you just have to appreciate, enjoy, learn and grow in the moment!  In this moment you will discover that life is not something to be handled, but something to live and there is the amazing magic that takes you from one day to the next!  I hope you enjoyed this moment!  Blessings!

Free Is Good!

A Great Tool!

Every now and then I like to share about one of the tools that I have found very helpful to me in my day-to-day journey of serving our Creator!  Tools make life easier, more enjoyable and often entertaining!  I have been blessed with some great tools that enable me to be more effective at what I do and today’s tool is another one of my favorites, which I use everyday!

John Maxwell and Zig Ziglar are two of the mentors that I have had as a part of my life for a long time.  Both of these gentleman through the years have stressed the importance of reading and how it impacts and influences our leading.  This is why many years ago, I dedicated myself to being a reader.  I read everyday and one of the tools that helps me to read better is my Amazon Kindle!

The Amazon Kindle is a book reader.  You can purchase books online or even through the reader and they are downloaded automatically to your device.  As you read you can type in notes about thoughts you have as you are reading, you can highlight passages that you want to remember and you can share through social media with others about what you are reading.

Kindle also allows me to download apps for my phone, iPad and computer that allow me to also read the very same books on those devices.  Wherever I leave off reading is saved and when I open the book on any of my devices, it takes me right back to where I left off.

Books generally run around $9.99, and there is a continuously changing library of free books available for download.  You could literally read for the rest of your life on this device and it would not have to cost you a dime!

If you are interested in a Kindle, they have come down in price and start at around $79 and go up to around $199 for a full-blown color tablet type!  You don’t have to have a Kindle if you already have a digital tablet of some kind, because you can download the Kindle Reading Application and read on pretty much any device for free!  I personally like the Kindle at times, because the screen on the basic Kindle is very friendly to outside lighting without a glare, which I sometimes have to fight on my other devices.

This Will Make You Think!

I really appreciate you taking the time to read my blog and wanted to share a free book that you can get your hands on.  I noticed the other day that a book I received for free and read last year is free once again.  It’s a great book, fun to read and will make you think.  I encourage you to check this out:  “Imaginary Jesus!”

I hope this post is helpful and a blessing and remember:  If there is anything that I can do to serve you and help make life better, then I sure would love to give it a try – just holla!  Blessings!
