Welcome, friend—I’m glad you’ve pulled up a chair on the front porch of my little corner of the internet. My name is Michael Joe Harvell, and I live my life with one simple mission: to glorify God, encourage people, and leave this world a little better than I found it. I’m a husband, father, pastor, writer, Jeep enthusiast, and front-porch thinker who believes that life is best lived on purpose. I serve as pastor of Eureka Baptist Church in Anderson, South Carolina, where I get the joy of preaching, teaching, and walking with people through the ups and downs of everyday life. Over the years, I’ve discovered that faith isn’t just about Sunday mornings—it’s about living every single day in the presence and power of God. I’m also an author. My books—including The Grace Exchange: How Forgiven People Forgive People and The Word Works—grow out of the sermons, stories, and lessons I’ve learned on this journey. I write in a style that’s conversational, a little front-porch-rocking-chair, and full of stories, quotes, and Scripture that point us back to the goodness of God’s Word. When I’m not writing or preaching, you might find me sitting outside with my Bible and journal, cruising the backroads in my Jeep Gladiator, or sharing a meal and some laughs with the good folks God has put in my life. I love helping people find peace in their spirit, strength in their body, and encouragement in their soul. This blog is simply an extension of that mission. Here you’ll find devotions, encouragement, reflections, and practical insights for living a life of purpose, peace, and joy. So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a rocking chair, and stay awhile—I’d be honored to walk this road of faith with you.

The Good Shepherd!

John 10:11 says, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

I’ve always loved the picture Jesus paints there. A shepherd isn’t distant. He isn’t detached. A shepherd lives with the sheep. He walks where they walk. He watches when they rest. He protects when danger comes.

And Jesus says, “That’s who I am.”

Not a hired hand who runs when things get hard.

Not someone who only shows up when it’s convenient.

But the Good Shepherd.

The hired hand might care about the paycheck.

But the shepherd cares about the sheep.

And the greatest proof of that love is the cross.

Jesus didn’t just talk about loving us—He laid down His life for us.

When we were wandering…

When we were weak…

When we were lost…

The Good Shepherd stepped between us and our danger and said, “I’ll take it.”

That means today you are not alone.

You are not unprotected.

You are not forgotten.

The Good Shepherd knows your name.

He knows where you are.

And He is watching over you with a love that was proven at Calvary.

So if life feels uncertain today, just remember this simple truth:

You belong to a Shepherd who loved you enough to die for you—and who lives today to lead you.

What Really Matters!

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a person that feareth the Lord, they shall be praised.” -Proverbs 31:30

Early this morning I was thinking about how much our world celebrates the outside of a person. We celebrate appearance, popularity, and applause. Social media is full of filters, highlights, and carefully chosen moments that make life look polished and perfect.

But Proverbs reminds us of something deeper and far more lasting.

The Bible says, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain.” In other words, charm can fool you, and beauty fades with time. Those things may catch the eye for a moment, but they cannot carry the weight of a life.

What truly stands the test of time is a heart that fears the Lord.

A person who walks with God…

A person who prays when no one else is around…

A person who lives with kindness, strength, and quiet faith…

That kind of life shines in a way no spotlight can produce.

You may not always be the loudest voice in the room.

You may not receive recognition every day.

But God sees a life that honors Him.

And the promise of Scripture is this: a person who fears the Lord will be praised.

Not just praised by people, but honored by heaven.

So today, don’t measure your worth by the world’s standards. Walk with God. Trust Him. Honor Him in the quiet places.

Because the most beautiful life is not the one that turns heads…

It’s the one that turns hearts toward the Lord.

Give It To God!

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

There’s something about carrying burdens that wears a person down. Life piles things on our shoulders—worries about family, health, finances, the future, and sometimes even things we can’t quite explain. If we’re not careful, those cares can begin to feel heavier than we can handle.

But God never intended for you to carry life alone.

Peter gives us a simple but powerful instruction: “Casting all your care upon him.” The word casting paints a picture. It means to throw something off of yourself. Not hold it, not manage it, not juggle it—throw it onto the Lord.

Why?

Because He cares for you.

Not just in a general way. Not just in a distant, heavenly way. The God who made the stars also pays attention to the burdens on your heart. The things that keep you awake at night matter to Him.

Sometimes we try to be strong and handle everything ourselves. But faith isn’t pretending we have no worries. Faith is taking those worries to the One who is big enough to carry them.

So today, whatever is weighing on you—give it to the Lord. Lay it in His hands through prayer. Trust His wisdom, His timing, and His love.

And remember this simple truth:

The same God who holds the world in His hands is more than able to hold your worries too.
