‘People say you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. Truth is, you knew what you had, you just never thought you’d lose it.”
There is a quiet truth hidden in those words.
Most of us don’t fail to appreciate life’s greatest blessings because we don’t recognize them. We simply assume they’ll always be there.
We assume there will always be another phone call with Mom or Dad. Another anniversary with our spouse. Another chance to tell our children we love them. Another Sunday to worship together. Another opportunity to forgive. Another tomorrow.
But life has a way of reminding us that tomorrow is never guaranteed.
I’ve stood beside enough hospital beds and preached enough funerals to know that what we often miss isn’t the value of something. It’s the fragility of it. We knew how precious it was. We just never imagined a day would come when it would no longer be ours.
That realization shouldn’t leave us filled with regret. It should awaken us to gratitude.
The Bible reminds us in James 4:14 (KJV), “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” Life is brief. Every sunrise is a gift. Every conversation is an opportunity. Every relationship is a blessing entrusted to us by God.
So don’t wait until something is gone before you decide it mattered.
Tell your spouse you love them today. Call your parents while you still can. Spend time with your children instead of just around them. Take some time for that friend you’ve been meaning to see. Serve the Lord with joy while you have strength.
Gratitude isn’t something we reserve for yesterday. It’s something we practice today.
One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is to stop rushing through life long enough to notice the blessings already surrounding you. The ordinary moments often become the extraordinary memories we wish we could revisit.
Don’t let familiarity rob you of appreciation.
The people sitting around your dinner table, the church family worshiping beside you, the friends who encourage you, the health you enjoy today, and the opportunities God has placed before you are gifts, not guarantees.
Treasure them. Love deeply. Forgive quickly. Laugh often.
And thank God every day for what He has entrusted to your care.
Because one day, today’s ordinary moments may become tomorrow’s cherished memories.
Don’t wait until they’re gone to realize how blessed you already are.
