250 Years Ago Today…

On June 28, 1776, just outside Charleston, South Carolina, a defining moment in American history unfolded.

A powerful British fleet under the command of Sir Peter Parker launched a fierce attack against Fort Sullivan. By every military measure, the British expected a swift and decisive victory.

But they underestimated something remarkable.

The fort had been built from South Carolina palmetto logs. Instead of shattering under the relentless bombardment, the soft, spongy wood absorbed the cannon fire. What appeared to be a weakness became one of the fort’s greatest strengths.

Hour after hour, the defenders stood their ground with courage and determination until the British were forced to retreat.

That victory at Fort Sullivan became one of the first great American triumphs of the Revolutionary War. It lifted the spirits of a young nation and proved that even the world’s most powerful army could be defeated by people who refused to give up.

In honor of the courageous leadership of Colonel William Moultrie, Fort Sullivan was later renamed Fort Moultrie.

History reminds us that strength doesn’t always look the way we expect. Sometimes what appears to be ordinary is exactly what God uses to accomplish something extraordinary.

A reminder that courage, determination, and faith can overcome even the greatest challenges.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1 KJV
