Welcome, friend—I’m glad you’ve pulled up a chair on the front porch of my little corner of the internet. My name is Michael Joe Harvell, and I live my life with one simple mission: to glorify God, encourage people, and leave this world a little better than I found it. I’m a husband, father, pastor, writer, Jeep enthusiast, and front-porch thinker who believes that life is best lived on purpose. I serve as pastor of Eureka Baptist Church in Anderson, South Carolina, where I get the joy of preaching, teaching, and walking with people through the ups and downs of everyday life. Over the years, I’ve discovered that faith isn’t just about Sunday mornings—it’s about living every single day in the presence and power of God. I’m also an author. My books—including The Grace Exchange: How Forgiven People Forgive People and The Word Works—grow out of the sermons, stories, and lessons I’ve learned on this journey. I write in a style that’s conversational, a little front-porch-rocking-chair, and full of stories, quotes, and Scripture that point us back to the goodness of God’s Word. When I’m not writing or preaching, you might find me sitting outside with my Bible and journal, cruising the backroads in my Jeep Gladiator, or sharing a meal and some laughs with the good folks God has put in my life. I love helping people find peace in their spirit, strength in their body, and encouragement in their soul. This blog is simply an extension of that mission. Here you’ll find devotions, encouragement, reflections, and practical insights for living a life of purpose, peace, and joy. So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a rocking chair, and stay awhile—I’d be honored to walk this road of faith with you.

Another Day – Another Dollar!

So it has been quiet a while since I have sat down to record some thoughts and ideas on the pages of this blog, but they say there is a time and place for everything, so, I guess I’m back! Actually my daughter has recently started to blog and she motivated me to get back to it. You can check out her most excellent writing and profound thinking at https://infragilisweb.wordpress.com/2018/03/19/5-ways-to-relieve-stress/.

I’ve come to realize in my almost 50 years of living that if we are not careful and intentional, then our days just become a big blur of nothing, stacking up on top of one another before we have had adequate time to appreciate and enjoy them for the precious gift that they are. I am learning that if I want to truly get the most out of my days, then I have to plan for it. I have to be on purpose and intentional. I have also found that a very big help is starting my day off right by setting myself up for success and blessing. To do any less is to be threatened with the feelings of frustration, anxiousness, stress and dissatisfaction.

I mean let’s be honest, how many of us wake up every morning fighting with the alarm by slapping the snooze button again and again and again, until finally we drag ourselves out of bed and through a rushed and dreary routine of getting ready, only to feel rushed, defeated and frustrated before we ever even get out of the door of our home?

Some of us get side tracked by the latest depressing news or caught up in checking our social media only to realize that we are not near as popular as we were hoping to be. Now we find ourselves on our way to work feeling rushed, defeated, insecure and unappreciated. Add to all of this, any wrong encounters we have along the way with family, friends, co-workers or strangers and we are a walking glutton for punishment.

What happened? Where did I go wrong? I thought I was supposed to wake up refreshed, reenergized and ready to face a new day filled with blessing and opportunity. I should be motivated, inspired, encouraged and excited. I should be walking in peace, faith and an overwhelming personal strength, but instead, I begin my work day already stressed out, anxious about “I don’t even know what” and just wanting the day to hurry up and end, so I can take a nap.

Start wrong and there is a very good possibility that your day is probably going to end wrong. Start strong and right and there is a very good possibility that your day is going to end strong and right! What I am saying is this: Most people that are stacking bad days on top of bad days, are people who are missing out from the very beginning. People who are allowing life to pass them by, without any real joy and fulfillment have invited that reality into their life by not taking charge of their day from the very beginning.

How do I know this? Because I am guilty! Ive been there, done that and got a drawer full of t-shirts. We need a morning plan, a morning ritual that helps us from the very beginning of our day to make sure that our day is headed in the right direction.

Mornings are one of the most beautiful times of the day. In fact, my two favorite times of the day is when the sun is coming up and when the sun is going down, When I learn to begin and end my day intentionally with the rising and setting of the sun, it almost seems if something magical happens.

Your Mornings Matter!

It’s time to get intentional about getting the most out of the precious beginning of our day. We need to develop a routine that works for us that will help us to get the most out of our morning and set us up to enjoy the blessings that are going to flow into and through our life during the magnificent and amazing day that is in front of us.

A Few Suggestions For Your Miracle Morning Routine:

1. Wake Up Earlier Than You Need To!

You need to give yourself time to not have to rush through your morning, so you can focus yourself spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically for the day that you are being blessed with.

2. Make Your Bed!

There is something empowering about making up your bed in the morning. If you don’t accomplish anything else, at least you made up your bed and your Mom would be so proud! Accomplishment breeds accomplishment! I have found that once I begin working on and completing task that I am even more motivated to get things done.

3. Meditate!

Take at least five to ten minutes to allow yourself to become mindful of the fact that you have a Creator and you were created on purpose and for a purpose and the fulfillment of that purpose is what brings your true joy. Use this time to relax and focus your breathing, to pray and even meditate on some scripture inspiration.

4. Practice Personal Care!

Don’t just get ready. Take care of yourself. Enjoy your shower or bath. Appreciate your hygiene routine and all that it does to make your life better. Put on your clothes and take time to feel good about how you look and how you feel.

5. Write In Your Journal!

Take a few minutes to write in your journal. I like to record a verse from the scriptures at the top of my page every day. And then throughout the day as I get thoughts, ideas or inspiration, I like to add them to my page. This is also a handy place for my daily “to do” list of things that I want to try and make sure that I accomplish.

6. Practice Gratitude!

I like to record at least three things that I am thankful for everyday in my journal by actually taking the time to write them down. I actually write out the words: “Thank your for…”. The practice of gratitude is good anytime that you feel yourself needing an attitude adjustment. Just stop and take a few moments to think about what you have to be thankful for. Everybody has something!

7. Go For A Walk!

It does not have to be long. It may to be to the end of your driveway and back, but take a moment to go outside and for just a few moments, soak in a little bit of the amazing nature that your are surrounded by. We take so much for granted! My daily walks are some of my best therapy!

Now go out and enjoy this amazing day. Today is your Creator’s gift to you and what you do with this day is your gift to your Creator!

Seven Steps To Get Your Mind Right When You Feel Like Quitting!

What do you do when you want to quit?  You have to get your mind out of the wrong place and into the right place.  Here are 7 steps to help get you there:

1.  Pray!
1 Thessalonians 5:16-19
16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit;

2.  Think About The Victories!
Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.”

3.  Share Your Burdens!
Galatians 6:1-5
Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. 5 For each one will bear his own load.

4.  Rest!
Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

5.  Renew Your Heart!
Psalms 51:10
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

6.  Do What You Can!
Colossians 3:23-24
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

7. Trust God!
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

You Can’t Earn Grace!

Simply Amazing!
Simply Amazing!

There is something really wrong with me, I still catch myself trying to earn my salvation. It would seem that my mind and thinking have been bent into going with the flow of my religion and the powers of this world. The Gospel of Grace that I think that I know so well, in some way becomes twisted into religious bondage and everyday distortion. If I am not careful, I tend to relegate my great, big, awesome God into a small score keeper tending the books, while sitting in a over sized chair. Church seems to have become institutionalized and often seems as if it is hurting more than it is helping.

Our big problem is that we tend to accept the idea of grace in theory, but not in practice. We say that we believe what the Scriptures teach about salvation being by grace, but our lives seem to always be focused on works. On most days, we are living stuck in guilt, fear and an “I just don’t care anymore” attitude, when we should be living in a free, loving, full of amazing grace miracle.

The truth is that our whole culture runs counterclockwise to grace, especially God’s understanding and explanation, which happens to be the only understanding and explanation that really matters. We become focused on a “do it yourself” spirituality and a “look out for yourself” attitude. Instead of practicing the Golden Rule of: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!”; we practice the worlds standard of “Do unto others, before they do unto you!”

Romans 2:8-10 says: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

Most of us view our relationship with God, as our chasing after and trying to catch Him, but the truth is: Our relationship with God is about Him chasing after and catching us with His amazing grace and unconditional love. God, our great lover, chases after our heart and affections and presents us with the most amazing gift ever given the gift of relationship, not based on what we have or have not done, but founded, nurtured and grown totally and completely by His amazing grace.

I don’t have to earn it! I can’t earn it, but I can enjoy it and when I do enjoy it, it makes loving Him back a very natural thing!
