“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” -James 1:19 (KJV)

Friend, we live in a world where everyone seems to be talking, but very few are truly listening. We rush to defend ourselves, prove our point, or get the last word. Yet James gives us a different path. He says, “Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”

Notice the order. God calls us to listen before we speak and to think before we react. Many misunderstandings could be avoided if we simply paused long enough to hear another person’s heart instead of assuming we already know what they’re going to say.

The same principle applies to our relationship with God. Sometimes we spend so much time telling Him everything on our minds that we never take time to quietly listen for His direction through His Word and by His Spirit.

A listening heart is a teachable heart. A teachable heart is a growing heart. And a growing heart becomes more like Christ every day.

Today, before you answer in frustration, pause. Before you react in anger, pray. Before you speak, ask yourself if your words will bring healing or hurt. You never know how one gentle response may change the direction of an entire conversation.

May God help us become people who are quick to listen, careful with our words, and slow to let anger take control. When Christ rules our hearts, our words will reflect His grace.
