What Is Love?

“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” 1 John 3:16

There are many words in this world that try to define love, but God did not merely define love — He demonstrated it.

Love is not just something we say.

Love is something we show.

Jesus did not stand at a distance and tell us He cared.

He stepped into our brokenness.

He carried our sin.

He endured the cross.

He laid down His life willingly so that we could receive mercy, forgiveness, and hope.

That kind of love changes a person.

When we truly understand what Christ has done for us, it softens our heart.

It reminds us that grace was given freely, not because we earned it, but because God is love.

And according to this verse, that same love is meant to flow through us.

We may never be asked to give our physical life for someone, but every day we have opportunities to lay down our preferences, our pride, our impatience, and sometimes even our comfort so that someone else might experience kindness, encouragement, and grace.

Love may look like a phone call.

Love may look like forgiveness.

Love may look like patience when it would be easier to walk away.

Love may look like choosing understanding over offense.

The love of Christ is not just something we celebrate.

It is something we live.

When forgiven people forgive people…

When cared-for people care for people…

When loved people love people…

The world begins to see Jesus.

Today, ask the Lord to help you walk in that kind of love.

Because when His love flows through your life, someone else may find the hope they have been praying for.
